About the webcam test
Start the camera to inspect a live image, choose another available camera, and view the settings and capabilities your browser exposes. Stop the test to release the camera.
Track FPS is reported by the active browser video track; preview FPS counts frames presented on this page over a recent second. Every 750 ms, a small 64 × 48 image sample is used to estimate average brightness, luminance spread for contrast, and edge detail for sharpness. These scene-dependent values do not calibrate camera quality. Frames are processed locally and are not saved or uploaded; some browser fields may be unavailable.
Webcam test FAQ
How do I start and stop the webcam test?
Select Start camera and allow browser access. The live image appears in the preview. Select Stop camera to end the test and release the camera.
How do I switch between webcams?
After allowing access, choose another camera from the Camera menu when multiple video inputs are available. The current capture stops before the new one starts.
How do I resize the webcam preview?
Use the Preview width and Preview height sliders above the image. They change only the display area; the camera resolution and capture settings stay the same.
Where can I see webcam resolution and frame rate?
Current settings show the resolution and frame rate reported by the active video track. Available capabilities show the ranges or choices the browser exposes; the preview frame rate is measured separately.
How can I compare lighting and focus in the preview?
Watch the live brightness, contrast, and sharpness estimates as you change the scene or lighting. They describe the image currently shown and are not a specification or calibration of the camera.
What does each available capability mean?
These values describe ranges or choices the browser reports as available. They are not necessarily the camera’s current settings; In a range, min is the lower limit and max is the upper limit. “Not available” means the browser did not report that field.
Width
The supported horizontal video resolution, in pixels. A min–max range describes what the browser can request from this track.
Height
The supported vertical video resolution, in pixels.
Aspect ratio
The supported width-to-height proportions of the video image. For example, 16:9 is about 1.78.
Track frame rate
The supported number of video frames per second. The current track rate and the rate actually shown in the preview can differ.
Facing direction
The camera orientations the browser reports, such as user-facing or environment-facing.
Resize mode
How the browser can derive a requested video size: use the source as supplied, or crop and scale it.
Focus mode
The focus methods the camera exposes, such as manual, single-shot, or continuous autofocus.
Exposure mode
The exposure control methods available, such as manual or automatic adjustment.
White balance mode
The available methods for adjusting color balance under different lighting.
Zoom
The range of camera zoom values the browser exposes. This is a camera control, not the displayed preview size.
Torch
Whether a continuous camera light can be used while the video track is active.
Brightness
The available range for the camera’s image brightness control. This differs from the scene brightness estimate below the preview.
Contrast
The available range for the camera’s light-versus-dark image adjustment.
Saturation
The available range for color intensity adjustment in the camera image.
Sharpness
The available range for the camera’s edge-enhancement control. This differs from the scene sharpness estimate.
Pan
The available horizontal aiming adjustment for a camera that supports moving its view.
Tilt
The available vertical aiming adjustment for a camera that supports moving its view.
Device ID
A browser-assigned identifier for this capture device; it is not a hardware specification.
Device group
A browser-assigned identifier that can relate devices in the same physical group.
Focus distance
The available range for the distance at which the camera focuses.
Exposure compensation
The available range for making automatic exposure brighter or darker, often expressed in exposure stops.
Color temperature
The available white-balance color temperature range, in kelvin.
ISO
The available range of sensor sensitivity settings.
Points of interest
Positions in the sensor image that can guide focus or exposure.
Background blur
Whether the browser can offer a background-blur effect for this video track.
Exposure time
The available range of time the sensor can expose each frame to light.
Power line frequency
The available anti-flicker settings for local electrical lighting frequency.
Display surface
The type of screen surface being captured; this normally applies to screen capture rather than a webcam.
